Christmas in Austin, Texas

Like most towns during the holiday season, Austin brings out their festive lights. However, there are two areas in town known for displaying an awesome array of lights- 37th Street, and the Trail of Lights in Zilker Park.
Starting back in the early 80s, neighbors on 37th Street in Hyde Park came together to create a completely unique Christmas light experience that is creative, wacky, and fun- what today would be deemed as, “Keeping Austin Weird.” Resident Jamie Lipman began wildly decorating his home, and his neighbors followed suit. Discarded motorcycles have been wrapped in hundreds of lights, bushes were sculpted into automobiles (including headlights), BBQ cookout scenes were created, and several strands of lights crisscrossed the street. From the rooftop of one house, massive amounts of lights were strung, and every 5 minutes a volcano erupted with a cloud of smoke, and the lights turned red, mimicking lava pouring down a mountain. Lipman would go all out, decorating his front and backyard, with thousands of lights, and covering his home in black plastic to have his homemade creations show up better and brighter.
Though the street has gained national attention for its creativity, it has gone through many changes in recent years. Old residents have moved out, and a new crowd moved in. Even Lipman himself moved from 37th Street last year, though he has offered to come back and help set up his famous lights. Time will tell if the new neighbors will keep the spirit of 37th Street alive.
Boasting 300,000 lights, The Trail of Lights is put on by the city of Austin, and grows bigger every year. The Trail of Lights was originally named Yule Fest in 1965, and is a one mile strip of static and moving displays located in Zilker Park. “The 12 Days of Christmas” display was the first created, and still holds a prominent position at the beginning of the trail. Many of the beautiful craggy oak trees have brightly colored lights from the bottom of their trunks to the tips of their highest branches. Along with the 43 lighted displays, shops selling trinkets, hot food and apple cider dot the trail. A variety of local dance troupes perform on the entertainment stage, Santa holds court for a throng of youngsters, and a massive Yule log burns night after night.
For most visitors to the Trail of Lights, their trip begins or ends at the Zilker Tree. Located just south of the trail, the Zilker Tree stands 155 feet tall, and is not really a tree at all, but one of Austin s original moonlight towers. The towers were erected in 1894 as the city s first illumination system, and 17 of the original 31 still stand. The tree hosts 3,309 lights, and children and adults alike can be found underneath the tree with their heads up staring at the lights, and spinning in circles until they crash to the ground. This year s tree lighting ceremony will be held on December 2nd at 6pm, with the Trail of Lights open evenings through December 31st. Top Resolutions for the New Year

It s that time of year again when we resolve to improve our lives and the lives of those around us. We all have different resolutions, but they all tend for fall into five categories:Get Healthy Get Financially Fit Self Improvement Improve Family/Relationships Improve Your Community
Get Healthy This is the most common category that our resolutions fall under, with losing weight being the most popular. Our goal may be to lose 20 pounds, get rid of that gut or to fit into those jeans in the back of our closet (it s been two years since we put those on!). We may decide to join the gym, diet for a month or change our eating habits to get and keep that weight off. We may have a fitness goal. The plan may be to get to the gym three days a week or walk/run fifteen miles a week. Maybe we are finally going to run that marathon!
Giving up or cutting back on one of our vices is another one of our most common resolutions. For those of us who still smoke, this is when we decide to give that up. Quitting drinking or drugs is another vice we try to get rid of as well. For some of us, caffeine may be our drug. This year, we are going to skip that third cup of coffee.
Get Financially Fit Finance seems to be on all of our mind this time of year. We ve all just spend more money on the holidays than we wanted to and are reviewing our finances from the past year. What happened to all that money? This coming year, we are going to save more money, spend less, pay off our debt, and get our finances organized so that we know where all that money went. We are going to setup a budget and stick to it!
Self Improvement All of our resolutions fall into this category for the most part, but we have specific goals to make us better. We want to get rid of those traits that we don t like; we are going to stop procrastinating and be more patient and relaxed. We are going learn to play the guitar, finally. And we are making resolutions to go back to school and learn something new. We all have something about ourselves that we are going to improve.
Improve Family/Relationships Spending more time with family and those that we love has always been important and at this time of year, we want more of it and we want quality time together. We want to stop arguing with our spouse and enjoy Date Night with them. We want Family Night with our kids once-a-week, breaking out the cards or monopoly. Talking to Mom every week and taking Dad out to lunch once a month is another one of our goals.
We are going to touch base with all of our friends more frequently. What has George been up to lately, we are all going to find out.
Improve Your Community We all want to make a difference in our community. We resolve to volunteer more time to help out at the local library reading to children, picking up trash at the local Clean the Park event or helping out at the local senior center.
Our vision isn t local anymore either; now we are trying to improve our planet. With global warming and environmental issues at the forefront of our everyday lives, we are resolving to do our part to improve our planet. Buying/using Green products is high on our to-do list. We are planning on buying hybrid cars, products with environmentally friendly packaging and energy efficient light bulbs. We are also resolving to change our habits by driving less, lowering the heater and taking shorter showers to use less water.

Most of them seem to be going under the old saying “Don t Confuse Me With The Facts”, it seems that many of their statements are based on emotions instead of reality. I used to enjoy discussing politics, especially with people that disagreed with me (I felt that I might learn something new or different.). I still do, but lately I have found that, while I still enjoy discussing politics with Independents and Republicans, I no longer enjoy discussing politics with most Democrats. They almost all say the same things and they sound as if they are reading from a script. Numerous Democrats that I have spoken with have stated, to paraphrase, “I don t like Bush (They never say President Bush), he s a thief and a liar and he is owned by the oil companies. He only cares about the rich. Nothing he says or does can be any good. Additionally, he is not smart enough to be President.”. The words they actually use are much worse, I just don t wish to repeat them here. The first thing that they all say is “Bush and his cronies stole the presidency from Vice-President Gore (They say President or Vice-President when speaking about President Clinton or Vice-President Gore.) in 2000.”. They say “Bush lied about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction.”. They say “Bush has ruined our economy”. They say “Bush was too slow in handling the Katrina disaster because he is prejudiced against blacks.” They say, “Bush has turned the world against us.”. Some are now even saying, “Bush knew that 9/11 was going to happen and did nothing to stop it so he would have an excuse for invading Iraq.”. When I ask them how they know these things they quote David Letterman, Jay Leno, Susan Sarandon, Alec Baldwin, Edward Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Howard Dean, Barbara Streisand and numerous other far left politicians, celebrities and newscasters. I attempt to discover all sides of the issues so I watch NBC News, Fox News and CNN, I read the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, Forbes and other magazines and newspapers. When I ask my Democrat acquaintances if they watch Fox News, they all say “No, it s too right wing.”. When I ask if they read the Wall Street Journal, Most say “No, it s too biased.”, and even the ones that do admit to reading the Journal say, “I only read the financial pages.”. When I ask if they read or watch any conservative media at all, they say “No, all that you find in the conservative media are lies and cover ups.”. When I try to counter some of their anti Bush statements with facts, they usually become upset and say “I don t want to hear your facts, they are all lies spread by big business and right wing religious groups , and even if they are true, I don t care.”. “I don t like Bush and that s all that matters.”. When I ask them for proof of their allegations against President Bush, they usually either quote someone on the far left or say “Everyone knows it s true.”. If I push them further they get upset and refuse to discuss the matter further. I have found that if you just listen to them and don t disagree with them, they can talk forever about how bad President Bush and the Republican Party are. However, if you disagree with any part of anything they say, they will usually end the conversation immediately by changing the subject. I don t necessarily agree with, or even care for, everything that President Bush says or does, but the strident clamoring of the Democrats is forcing me to, more and more, side with him and the Republican Party. I am a Republican, but used to consider myself an Independent and voted my conscience rather than for a political party. Now, the blatant partisanship and lack of reason displayed by the Democratic Party has forced me to become an ardent Republican. The Republican Party, at least, still embraces some liberals and moderates. The Democratic Party appears to be trying to silence anyone who doesn t agree with the far left. About The Author David G. As if things couldn t go any further down, the health plan called her up to inform her that the company they used to work for had gone out of business and were no longer paying their minute part of the cobra payment, so as of the end of the month they were cutting her off! If she wanted to keep the HMO, they would grant her a “special” plan (instead of turning her down, again) that would cost $200 more a month, her appointment fees would quadruple, and when her delivery time came, they would have to pay $2,500.00 at the hospital and then $200.00 a day until she went home! The supervisor she asked to speak to told her that this was more than legal and referred her to the book she received when she signed up to read what rights she had and what rights they had. After reading the brochure, it was indeed legal for the company to treat her in this way, but does that make it ethical? First: why would they want this type of publicity? How does a company that is supposed to care for you medically decide to put you under such stress during what should be a wonderful time of your life? Are they even thinking what the publicity would be like if she miscarries due to this extra stress? Yes, legally health agencies have the right to terminate your coverage, raise your rates and change the benefits they provide-they are a business and they are not non-profit. However, they are in the medical field-doesn t that mean they should have to follow the rules of the profession? One of the major points of the Hippocratic oath is: First do no harm. This HMO should remember this point.

The Difference between Wealth and Money

First let us realise that wealth and money are more often than not, taken to be the same thing.
You would notice the difference when you came to sort out, what you had saved from the wreck, when you found yourself alone on a desert island.
You would find that money would be worthless and you would flourish and prosper in accordance with what you could use for your survival. You would assess your wealth by your survival potential.
A financial consultant would be a liability. As would be a lawyer or a fund manager. Even if you had a solar panel to power your computer, you would only use your computer for playing games.
The sort of consultant whom you might be glad to have along, in order to help you to survive, would not exists in The City of London.
The engine room that powers the British economy, would be unable to aid your survival in any way and would speed your demise with inexorable force.
Once you were grooved in as a really successful survivor, coping with hard reality, you would have a very different view of money as opposed to real wealth.
Landed back in your city office and looking at the reports from the National Statistics Office, you would feel distinctly uncomfortable to find that the global economy, currently has no survival potential.
Short term you would have nothing to worry about, provided you were totally indifferent to the survival of life on this planet. And that you knew for certain sure, that you would not be required to come back home and sort out the mess.
The human race has not yet discovered a science of economics and must try to get by with a variety of idealisms. Each derives from a different inspiration. Some inspirations are better than others, so that it is possible to have a game to play, in which no one can be sure of winning.
The result is that the human race itself always loses and cannot win. We all need games to play and possibly the real reason the global economy is in a mess, is because if we straightened out the mess, we might find ourselves with no game to play. Nothing to write about in the Press.
Of course the fact is, that there are much better games to play, which we do not recognise.
One very simple example of this phenomenon would be, that if we could be guaranteed peace, we might ruin the arms trade.
It could seem to be dangerous, to be free of danger.
We need to find some explanation for highly intelligent human beings, such as our statesmen, making such a hash of Economics.
Economics is a simple subject, rendered so complex, as to be beyond understanding.
Economics should be the science of creating and distributing the goods and services required by the human race for its survival.
Economics gets complicated, when it advances beyond a barter system and requires a means of exchange.
We find it all too easy to produce the goods and services for exchange and then find it impossible to distribute what is produced.
That is because we do not know and understand money, which we have chosen as our means of exchange.
We have tried using gold and ran into difficulty. We then abandoned money as a means of exchange and switched to credit and then claimed that credit is another word for money. But credit is also another word for debt. It is when we use debt as currency that economics becomes a mess.
It is impossible to decide the value of a currency, which has debt as a major component. Valuation sinks into pure guesswork.
We now have a two tier market. A money market and a market for goods and services.
This distinction is never made and the market is taken to mean the money market.
Gambling in this market becomes the activity on which The City of London pulls in 30 per cent of the nation s wealth.
Because there is no semblance of a science, of such a form of economics and its entirety is inspirational logic; the insider rules supreme.
